Arsenal’s tactical brilliance at set-pieces proved decisive in their 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Tuesday night. Two goals from corners extended the Gunners’ Premier League tally to 41 goals from set-pieces since mid-2021, cementing their reputation as the league’s most efficient team in this aspect.
Arsenal’s Deadly Corners Dominate the Game
Arsenal’s strategy was clear: dominate from corners. The hosts took more shots from corners (seven) than open play (six) during the match. Jurrien Timber opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, glancing a near-post header past United goalkeeper Andre Onana. Later, a far-post corner allowed Thomas Partey to set up a second goal, inadvertently deflected in by William Saliba.
The Emirates Stadium came alive in the second half as Arsenal unleashed a relentless wave of corner routines. Each delivery from Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice threatened Manchester United’s defense, leaving the visitors unable to cope with Arsenal’s precise execution.
First Half Struggles, Second Half Domination
The first half saw limited action, with Arsenal registering just five shots, their lowest in a Premier League first half this season. However, the Gunners burst into life after halftime, showing improved tempo and fluidity. By full-time, they had secured their fourth consecutive win in all competitions, narrowing the gap to league leaders Liverpool to seven points.
Manchester United’s Defensive Focus Falls Short
Manchester United, under new manager Ruben Amorim, displayed a conservative approach focused on defensive solidity. They managed only five shots and six touches in the Arsenal box, reflecting their restrained style of play. While the team’s defensive organization showed promise, their lack of attacking intent highlighted the transitional phase they are undergoing.
Amorim’s decision to experiment with Bruno Fernandes in central midfield and give a debut to Leny Yoro underlined the team’s evolving structure. Despite the defeat, the manager emphasized a long-term vision, urging fans to remain patient during this rebuilding phase.
Arsenal’s win marked their fourth consecutive league victory over Manchester United, a historic first for the club. The result reinforces their growing confidence in chasing down Liverpool at the top of the table. With a visit to Fulham on Sunday, the Gunners will look to continue their impressive form, relying on their refined dead-ball tactics to maintain their momentum.
Arsenal currently holds second place in the Premier League, amassing 25 points from 13 matches. They trail league leaders Liverpool by 9 points and are level with Chelsea on points but ahead due to a superior goal difference.
Upcoming Arsenal Fixtures:
- Fulham vs. Arsenal (December 8, 2024)
- Arsenal vs. Everton (December 14, 2024)
Arsenal has shown consistent form, securing two wins and a draw in their last three matches. However, the 9-point gap to Liverpool remains substantial. To close this deficit, Arsenal must continue their positive results and capitalize on any potential slip-ups by their competitors.
