With the signings of Jhonny Kennda and Dário Essugo, Chelsea’s total number of contracted male players will reach 89.
The two young talents — Kennda, a forward from Brazil, and Essugo, a promising midfielder from Portugal — are expected to join Chelsea’s development structure. Their addition further expands the club’s already extensive player roster, which includes senior, reserve, and loaned-out professionals.
This number highlights Chelsea’s strategy of long-term talent acquisition, particularly since the club’s ownership transition. Many players have been signed on extended contracts, with a focus on youth and potential resale value.
Dário Essugo became the youngest player to debut for Sporting CP in Portugal at just 16 years and 6 days.
Chelsea have one of the largest player loan networks in Europe, often sending young talents to clubs across multiple leagues.
In the past decade, the club has regularly exceeded 60 players under contract — but reaching 89 marks an unprecedented scale.
While managing such a large squad presents logistical and sporting challenges, Chelsea continues to invest in youth with the aim of long-term development and competitive advantage.
