Donnarumma’s Heroics Propel PSG to Champions League Final

Paris Saint-Germain secured their place in the Champions League final after a standout performance by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma against Arsenal. The Italian keeper was instrumental in keeping Arsenal at bay, particularly during the early stages of the match when they attempted to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg.

Donnarumma’s crucial saves included a remarkable stop from Gabriel Martinelli’s close-range attempt and an impressive block of Martin Ødegaard’s powerful low shot. Reflecting on his performance, Donnarumma commented, “It was a beautiful match. My save today on Ødegaard? It was very nice, the ball went between the legs of one of my teammates. I work a lot on low balls, but Mother Nature also had her say.”

Despite Arsenal’s efforts, goals from Fabián Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi put PSG firmly in control before Bukayo Saka managed to score late in the game. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged Donnarumma’s impact, stating that he made a significant difference over both legs of the tie.

Donnarumma will make his first appearance in a Champions League final when PSG faces Inter Milan on May 31. His performance in both legs against Arsenal showcased his elite goalkeeping skills, with Arsenal forward Mikel Merino praising his incredible saves.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice echoed these sentiments, noting that despite their opportunities to score multiple goals over two legs, Donnarumma’s exceptional form was undeniable. In total, Donnarumma made five saves during the match and effectively commanded his penalty area against Arsenal’s direct approach.

After the match, Donnarumma humbly acknowledged fellow goalkeeper Yann Sommer’s performance for Inter Milan earlier in the week: “Yesterday [Sommer] was very good, he made more saves than me. He played a fantastic match.”
