A café affiliated with Everton Football Club has taken an unusual step to emphasize the club’s deep-rooted rivalry with Liverpool FC — by serving blue ketchup instead of the traditional red version.
The decision reflects the intensity of the Merseyside derby, one of the most historic and passionate rivalries in English football. For many Everton fans, the color red — strongly associated with Liverpool FC — is deliberately avoided, even in everyday items.
The Merseyside derby, which features Everton and Liverpool, is known for its fierce but respectful atmosphere. While the two clubs share the city of Liverpool and even have families split between allegiances, symbols and colors still play a significant role in fan identity.
The Merseyside derby is the longest-running top-flight derby in English football history, first played in 1894. Despite the rivalry, the fixture is often referred to as the “friendly derby” due to the city’s close-knit community and shared history — but that doesn’t stop fans from expressing their loyalty in creative ways.
In the past, some Everton fans have even painted household items or decorations blue during derby week — from Christmas trees to birthday cakes — as a playful show of support.
