A new semi-automated offside detection system is set to be trialed during the FA Cup fifth round, representing a pivotal step toward its prospective adoption in the Premier League by the end of the current season. The technology is designed to assist match officials by providing an additional layer of accuracy in determining offside decisions.
The trial will take place in seven of the eight fifth-round fixtures, with one exception. The match between Preston and Burnley, held at Deepdale, will not incorporate the new system, as it is the only game not hosted at a Premier League stadium.
Officials have confirmed that the primary aim of this trial is to evaluate the system’s performance, reliability, and overall impact on match officiating. If the test results are positive, there is potential for the Premier League to consider integrating this technology into its top-flight competitions in the future.
The introduction of such technological solutions follows a broader movement within football to enhance decision-making processes and reduce human error. The outcomes of the FA Cup trials may influence similar initiatives across other competitions, potentially leading to wider adoption of automated systems in the sport.
