Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong is set to join Liverpool after the Premier League champions activated his €35 million release clause. The 24-year-old Dutch international will fill the right-back position vacated by Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is expected to move to Real Madrid on a free transfer. Frimpong, known for his pace and attacking prowess, has signed a five-year contract with Liverpool.
Frimpong played a crucial role in Leverkusen’s historic unbeaten Bundesliga season, contributing significantly from the right flank in a 3-4-3 formation under manager Xabi Alonso. His impressive record includes 30 goals and 44 assists in 190 appearances for Leverkusen.
Liverpool’s interest in Frimpong dates back to his youth days at Manchester City’s academy. His status as a ‘homegrown’ player under UEFA regulations made him an attractive option for Liverpool. The club also extended Conor Bradley’s contract, indicating that both players will compete for the right-back position next season.
Frimpong’s move signals a tactical shift for Liverpool under manager Arne Slot, who favors rapid transitions over possession-based play. Despite initial doubts about his defensive capabilities, Frimpong has proven himself at both club and international levels.
With Mohamed Salah potentially missing part of the next season due to the Africa Cup of Nations, Frimpong might also see time in more advanced roles. His versatility and familiarity with several Dutch teammates at Liverpool should ease his transition into the squad.
