Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has expressed his belief that the current Reds squad, under the leadership of Arne Slot, is distinct from the teams managed by Jurgen Klopp, highlighting their potential to make history this season.
Liverpool currently hold a six-point advantage at the top of the Premier League table with a game in hand, ahead of their final match of 2024 against West Ham United on Sunday. Alisson emphasized the team’s evolving style and shared his optimism about their chances for success this season.
Speaking about the differences between Klopp’s era and the current team, Alisson remarked:
“I don’t think it’s too similar, [it’s] two different teams. A few players still play in this team, but we have a little bit different style now, more ball possession where before it was really straightforward: a lot of transition, a lot of intensity.”
Reflecting on the achievements under Klopp, including a Premier League title and a Champions League trophy, Alisson acknowledged the uniqueness of that period while encouraging the current squad to focus on their own journey:
“We don’t have to compare ourselves with the teams in the past, we have to create our own history. With the players who came in, they brought a lot of quality. What we can do, we’re not going to erase the things we did in the past that were really special and will always be in the history of this club.”
The Brazilian goalkeeper praised manager Arne Slot for his leadership, noting the seamless transition following Klopp’s departure:
“When Arne joined the club, everybody thought it would be hard work for him to replace a manager like Jurgen. But he’s showing his qualities and he brings us a lot of good things.”
Competing on Multiple Fronts
Liverpool’s dominance extends beyond the Premier League. The Reds are leading their UEFA Champions League group with a perfect record after six matches. They have also secured a spot in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup, where they will face Tottenham Hotspur.
Their FA Cup campaign begins on January 11 with a third-round tie against League Two side Accrington Stanley. Domestically, Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League fixtures include matches against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest. Notably, Forest remains the only team to have beaten Liverpool this season, with a 1-0 victory at Anfield in September.
Alisson concluded with an optimistic outlook:
“This season this group has to create its own history. We have the quality, the commitment, and the hunger to achieve great things. Winning is not everything, but it’s a big part of football, and I want to remember this team as a winning team.”
Liverpool’s recent performances have been impressive, solidifying their position at the top of the Premier League. Their 3-1 victory over Leicester City on December 26 extended their lead to seven points, with 42 points from 17 matches.
In the UEFA Champions League, Liverpool has been dominant, winning all six group stage matches.
Looking ahead, Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures include a Premier League match against West Ham United on December 29, followed by an FA Cup third-round tie against Accrington Stanley on January 11. Notably, Nottingham Forest, who handed Liverpool their only league defeat this season, remains a formidable opponent in future encounters.
