Liverpool is exploring the possibility of signing RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons as a more cost-effective alternative to Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz. The Reds are keen on strengthening their midfield options this summer, with Simons emerging as a viable candidate. The Dutch midfielder has expressed interest in joining Liverpool, and his transfer fee is expected to be around £60 million, significantly lower than the estimated €300 million (£253 million) for Wirtz.
Simons, who was born in Amsterdam, showcased his talent during the 2024-25 Bundesliga season by scoring 10 goals and providing 7 assists in 25 league appearances. Despite RB Leipzig finishing seventh in the Bundesliga, Simons’ performance has caught the attention of Liverpool’s management.
Virgil van Dijk, a key figure at Liverpool, has praised Simons’ abilities, stating: “He is a very talented player who has so much to give. He can still be so much better than he is already but he has a good mentality.” Leipzig is open to selling Simons if they receive an appropriate offer.
While Bayern Munich and Manchester City have also shown interest in Wirtz, Manchester City reportedly cooled their pursuit due to financial concerns. Liverpool continues to evaluate their options as they aim to bolster their squad for the upcoming season.
