Alisson or Kelleher for Slot’s Top Pick?
Liverpool FC faces a selection challenge as manager Arne Slot must soon decide his preferred starting goalkeeper. Alisson Becker is on the brink of returning to full fitness following a hamstring injury suffered in a match against Crystal Palace on October 5. During his absence, understudy Caoimhin Kelleher has excelled, leading to debates over who should be the first-choice keeper.
Alisson, who has been Liverpool’s primary goalkeeper since 2018, has missed significant playing time over the past seasons due to various injuries. Despite his experience and impressive track record, including nearly 500 career appearances and 71 caps for Brazil, his physical reliability has been a concern. Conversely, Kelleher, six years younger than Alisson, has remained largely injury-free since his debut in 2019 and has shown remarkable skill, especially in his ability to play outside his box and contribute to the team’s ball handling.
Statistically this season, both goalkeepers have started six league games. Alisson boasts a higher save percentage at 88.2%, allowing only two goals and securing three clean sheets. Kelleher, while slightly less successful in goal prevention with six conceded goals, has demonstrated critical saves in close matches, such as the recent games against Brighton and Aston Villa.
The new goalkeeping coach, Fabian Otte, alongside Slot, faces a tough decision influenced by factors like consistency, health, and performance under pressure. Although Slot has indicated Alisson will resume his role upon full recovery, Kelleher’s recent performances and pivotal saves, including stopping a penalty from Mbappe, highlight his capability as more than just a backup.
As Liverpool remains undefeated with Kelleher in goal and continues to lead in both the Premier League and Champions League, the argument for maintaining a winning lineup is compelling. The decision on who will be the starting goalkeeper will not only reflect on their abilities but also on Slot’s strategic vision for Liverpool’s future challenges.
Liverpool’s recent performances have been impressive, maintaining an eight-point lead at the Premier League summit and achieving a perfect record in the Champions League. This success is attributed to Arne Slot’s tactical acumen and the squad’s depth, with players like Kelleher stepping up during key absences. The upcoming fixture against Manchester City will be a significant test, especially considering City’s determination to rebound from their recent struggles. Slot’s decision regarding the starting goalkeeper could be pivotal in maintaining the team’s momentum during this critical phase of the season.
