April 2025 — A heated exchange has emerged ahead of the upcoming clash between Olympique Lyonnais and Manchester United, after Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matić strongly responded to comments made by United goalkeeper André Onana.
Earlier, Onana had compared the two clubs, suggesting Manchester United were “much better” than Lyon. In response, Matić delivered a pointed remark, criticising Onana’s standing within United’s history.
“I respect everyone, but when you’re one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history, you should be more careful with what you say. If it was van der Sar, Schmeichel, or De Gea saying that, fair enough… but Onana is one of the worst,” Matić said.
Onana later addressed the situation and clarified his stance, denying any intention of disrespect toward Lyon.
“I would never disrespect another club. We know tomorrow’s game will be difficult against a strong opponent. We are focused on our preparation and want to make our fans proud. At least I have won trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some cannot say the same.”
The war of words adds extra tension to an already highly anticipated fixture. Lyon and Manchester United are set to meet in a crucial European encounter, with both sides seeking to advance and make a statement on the continental stage.
