Newcastle and Aston Villa Surge in Premier League Rankings

As the 2024-25 Premier League season nears its conclusion, Newcastle United and Aston Villa have made significant strides in the standings. Both teams have shown remarkable form, with Newcastle losing only one of their last ten matches across all competitions, while Aston Villa has lost just three of their past fifteen. Since March 8, these clubs have been averaging over two points per game in league play, with Villa at 2.63 and Newcastle at 2.44.

Newcastle’s success can be attributed to the impressive performances of Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes on the wings, who have collectively contributed seven goals and seven assists since early March. Barnes has been particularly effective, replacing Anthony Gordon on the left side of the attack and achieving a combined total of 13 goals and assists this season.

Aston Villa’s recent achievements are due to a robust defense and strategic substitutions. Despite a lower possession rate, they have maintained a strong defensive record by allowing opponents minimal opportunities for quality shots. Late-game counterattacks have been especially fruitful for Villa, with Marcus Rashford and Donyell Malen providing crucial goals.

Heading into March, Newcastle was eighth in the league with 44 points, while Villa was seventh with 45 points. Both teams have climbed significantly since then, aided by key victories against top-tier teams like Liverpool and Manchester City.

Looking ahead, Newcastle’s chances of finishing in the top five are estimated at 95%, while Villa’s odds range between 37% to 42%. Their upcoming matches against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United could further influence their final standings.
