Premier League Introduces Semi-Automated Offside Technology

London, April 2, 2025 — The Premier League has officially implemented semi-automated offside technology, marking a significant step toward increasing accuracy and reducing delays in key officiating decisions.

The system, which uses advanced limb-tracking cameras and artificial intelligence to detect offside positions, was first tested in selected FA Cup matches earlier this season. Following successful trials and positive feedback, the technology is now being rolled out across all Premier League fixtures.

Under the new system, 12 dedicated tracking cameras are installed in stadiums to capture players’ movements with high precision. The data is processed in real time to create a 3D animation, which is then reviewed by VAR officials before a final decision is communicated to the on-field referee.

This marks a major upgrade from the traditional VAR offside reviews, which required manual drawing of lines and often led to long stoppages. The new method significantly shortens decision-making time and reduces room for human error.

Background:

  • First use in English football: FA Cup 2024–25
  • Technology provider: FIFA-approved system also used in 2022 World Cup
  • How it works: Combines 3D animations, AI, and real-time data from cameras
  • Main goal: Faster, more consistent offside rulings

The Premier League is the latest major competition to adopt this innovation, following UEFA, FIFA tournaments, and Serie A. Clubs have been briefed on the system, and referees have undergone special training to adapt to the new process.

The technology will be used for the remainder of the current season and is expected to be a core component of officiating in the 2025–26 campaign and beyond.
