Southampton have officially been relegated from the Premier League with seven matches remaining in the 2024/25 season — the earliest drop in the competition’s history based on games left to play.
This surpasses previous records set by Derby County and Huddersfield Town, who were both relegated in March but still had six matches to play. Southampton’s fall is now statistically the earliest confirmed relegation in terms of fixtures remaining.
The Saints have endured a difficult campaign, struggling to find form throughout the season. Their early exit marks a historically poor season for the club, which had returned to the Premier League just two years earlier.
Southampton’s drop highlights significant challenges on and off the pitch, and the club now faces the task of rebuilding in the Championship next season.
- Southampton’s relegation with seven games left is the earliest in Premier League history.
- The club previously spent 11 consecutive seasons in the Premier League from 2012 to 2023.
- Derby County still hold the record for fewest points in a Premier League season (11 in 2007/08).
