Manchester United Edge Arsenal on Penalties to Advance in FA Cup

Arsenal 1-1 Manchester United (3-5 on penalties)

In a dramatic third-round FA Cup clash at Emirates Stadium, 10-man Manchester United secured their place in the next round with a penalty shootout victory over Arsenal. Backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir played a pivotal role, making key saves during the match and in the shootout.

Bayindir’s standout performance began with a crucial save against Martin Odegaard that denied Arsenal the lead. His composure continued in the penalty shootout, where he stopped Kai Havertz’s attempt, sealing United’s 5-3 win on penalties despite Diogo Dalot’s red card in the 61st minute.

Arsenal, who had an Expected Goals (xG) total of 3.22, failed to capitalize on their numerous chances. Gabriel found the back of the net with a set-piece goal, but it wasn’t enough to secure victory. This result followed their midweek EFL Cup semi-final first-leg defeat to Newcastle United.

Bruno Fernandes put Manchester United ahead early in the second half with a well-taken goal. The visitors demonstrated resilience and tactical discipline under new manager Ruben Amorim, who has overseen a recent turnaround, including a draw against Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Manchester United now face a favorable Premier League fixture against bottom-placed Southampton, offering a strong opportunity to secure their first home win since December 1.

Meanwhile, Arsenal must regroup quickly as they prepare to host Tottenham Hotspur in a crucial midweek Premier League derby. The Gunners are experiencing their first back-to-back home matches without victory since April and will be determined to avoid a third consecutive home setback, which they haven’t encountered in nearly three years.
