Kaizer Chiefs’ Bobby Motaung Faces R4.3 Million Debt Lawsuit

Bobby Motaung, manager of the Kaizer Chiefs Football Club, is currently involved in a legal dispute over an unpaid debt. Court documents have been filed to sequester his estate, with Pent Up Investment CC claiming that Motaung owes them over R4.3 million related to a failed property transaction.

Costas Couremetis, representing Pent Up Investment, alleges that Motaung has not settled the outstanding amount from a R9 million judgment issued in November 2009. According to Couremetis, “Pursuant to a failure by Lakeshore (Motaung was listed as the sole director of Lakeshore Trading) to make payment of the purchase price for the property in full, the applicant instituted proceedings… and obtained judgment on or about November 12, 2009 in a sum exceeding R9-million, plus interest and legal costs.

The affidavit indicates that as of January 2024, more than R4.3 million remains unpaid. Despite acknowledging the debt, Motaung allegedly has not made significant efforts to resolve it.

This legal issue adds to previous controversies involving Motaung. In 2016, he was implicated in a fraud and corruption case related to Mbombela Stadium’s construction; however, charges were dropped due to insufficient evidence. The same year, he received a tax bill from SARS amounting to R44.7 million. In 2021, SARS directed liquidators to recover R90 million from another company where Motaung was a director.

The outcome of this ongoing legal battle could impact both his personal finances and his standing at Kaizer Chiefs.
