Orlando Pirates promising young defender, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, is making significant strides in South African football. Recently named in Hugo Broos’ preliminary 41-man squad for Bafana Bafana’s upcoming international friendlies, the 19-year-old has caught the attention of European clubs. Known for his maturity and tactical awareness on the field, Mbokazi is one of 12 new players selected by Broos as he seeks to integrate fresh talent into the national team.
Despite interest from African clubs, including Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, Orlando Pirates have decided against considering offers from within the continent. Former Pirates coach Jose Riveiro, who may soon take a managerial role in Cairo, remains an admirer of Mbokazi. However, sources indicate that the club is focused on facilitating a move to Europe for the young talent.
Mbokazi was notably absent from South Africa’s U20 squad at the recent AFCON tournament. This decision was strategic, allowing him to remain with Orlando Pirates during their challenging season across various competitions such as the Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League. Although the team did not secure victories in these tournaments, Mbokazi’s individual performances were impressive.
As scouts continue to search for emerging talent in Africa, Mbokazi’s future seems increasingly linked to Europe, where he can further develop his skills.
