Madrid, April 16, 2025 — Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger is once again at the center of controversy following an incident during the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg against Arsenal. During the second half, the German international appeared to step on Arsenal midfielder Ethan Nwaneri Lewis-Skelly, sparking reactions from players and fans alike.
The challenge, which occurred during a heated moment in the match, was not formally penalised with a red card, but it has raised questions about Rüdiger’s on-field conduct. Replays show Rüdiger’s foot landing heavily on the Arsenal player’s leg while both were scrambling for the ball.
This is not the first time the Real Madrid defender has been involved in contentious situations. Over the years, Rüdiger has developed a reputation for playing on the edge — a style that often leads to disciplinary issues:
- 2021 – UEFA Euro: Rüdiger was seen biting France’s Paul Pogba on the shoulder during the group-stage match. Although no action was taken during the game, the incident was widely criticised.
- 2022 – El Clásico: In a fiery match against Barcelona, Rüdiger clashed multiple times with opposing players, receiving a yellow card for persistent fouling and confrontational behavior.
- 2024 – La Liga: Rüdiger received a straight red card after an off-the-ball incident in a match against Valencia.
Despite his physical playing style, Rüdiger remains a key figure in Madrid’s defence, known for his strength and aerial dominance. However, critics argue that repeated incidents such as this could overshadow his contributions on the pitch.
Neither Real Madrid nor UEFA has yet issued an official statement regarding the latest challenge. It remains to be seen whether disciplinary action will follow upon video review.
