Frozen Out: What’s Next for Sergio Reguilón at Tottenham?

Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilón, who has not featured in a single match since returning from a loan spell at Brentford this summer, is reportedly feeling rejected at the club. With a possible departure looming in January, his absence from the matchday squad raises questions about his future with the team.

Tottenham are experiencing a volatile start to their second season under manager Ange Postecoglou, currently sitting 10th in the Premier League after 11 games. The team has suffered five defeats, including a setback at home against Ipswich Town before the international break.
Midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur received a seven-match suspension for making racist remarks about Heung-Min Son and his South Korean teammates.

Reguilón, who joined the club from Real Madrid for €30 million in 2020, has failed to win Postecoglou’s confidence despite a successful loan spell at Brentford. He has only been included in the squad for one game this season—an EFL Cup match against Coventry City—but has yet to take the field.
In a press conference, Postecoglou said, “He’s a Spurs player. We’re getting 20 players together for training; that’s our strategy for the day before the match. It made sense to bring in a few young players so as not to disrupt the academy.”

The 27-year-old defender could return to Spain, where he has previously played on loan at Sevilla and Atlético Madrid. His current contract expires at the end of the season, and a departure from the club seems inevitable, whether in January or the summer.
